Medical herbalists practising in the western herbal tradition treat people of all ages affected by a wide variety of conditions. Digestive and intestinal complaints, skin and nervous conditions feature prominently among those treated successfully, but many others have responded well to western herbal medicine. Medical herbalists adopt a holistic approach to both diagnosis and treatment, covering all aspects of the patient’s condition and health in order to treat the root cause wherever possible. Training includes medical science, so that within the holistic framework orthodox methods of diagnosis may be used. Where appropriate, patients may be referred for diagnostic tests with another practitioner. At the initial appointment an extensive medical and health history is taken. A follow-up appointment is usually arranged for two to three weeks after the first consultation. The total number of appointments required varies depending on progress. Treatments include herbal mixtures in the form of tinctures or infusions, External preparations may be given. If patients are taking other medications they will be checked for possible interactions.
